Sunday the 8^th October saw a Hellingly houndDogs AFC send their Cadet team to Canterbury in round 1 of the SEYAF Championships 2017/18. This season sees the HoundDogs entering only a Cadet team due as a lot of last season’s Youth team moved up to the U17’s Contact team.

The team started the tournament against last

season’s runner’s up, East Kent Mavericks. The team started slowly on offence and struggled to move the ball very well. On the other hand, the Mavericks looked well set up and ran away with the game 24-0. The score could have been worse had it not been for a few fantastic stops by the defence especially Charlie Mullineux.

The HoundDogs then took on Kent Phoenix. The team fared slightly better, but still failed

to cross the line and score. However, they managed to move the ball for several 1^st downs and came with a few yards of scoring thanks to a couple of nice runs from Ben Boorer and Morgan Scott-Brundle. The score went in the favour of the Phoenix 12-0

Then came the Kent Exiles, who had won the Championship the previous year. Thing could have not got off better with a weaving run on the first play of the game that saw the HoundDogs just 10 yards short of the endzone. It was then a throw from Hayden Puttick who Ben Boorer then saw the HoundDogs cross the line and score. The

Exiles came back thanks to some amazing work from their Running backs which score them move to 18-3. Charlie Pattenden then made a great stop as the Exiles looked to run riot. The game finished with the Exiles winning 18-6.

The HoundDogs then saw the return of the Phoenix. The HoundDogs started brightly thanks to Morgan’s weaving runs, along with some new players being thrown in from the coach saw the Dogs almost cross the line. However, things started to fall apart thanks to a couple of long runs from the Phoenix’s running back with saw them score of two successive drive. The game finished Phoenix 12, HoundDogs 0.

Hellingly HoundDogs are actively looking to recruit more players to all three age groups.

Since there formation in May 2016, Hellingly HoundDogs have been looking to recruit more players to their Flag Football programme. This was mainly aimed at players aged between 8 an 14. Flag Football is the non-contact version of American Football and helps players to develop their skills in a fun and safe environment.

Earlier in 2017, the club were awarded a Sport England grant of £9830 to help develop a new contact/kitted team, aimed at encouraging more 14 to 17 year old to come along and play American football. The aim is to enter a team into a league in 2018 and for the team to start to play competitive football at all age groups.

We will be taking a couple of players and games to local events through out the summer to fetes and events including the following:

Match report:

Under 11’s

The U11’s team arrived at Canterbury, already a man down and one who had refused not

to play after having his knee glued at the hospital a few days before. The team had glimpses of some fantastic work but it just wasn’t their day. The team played well in the first warm up game against Kent Phoenix, but didn’t fair so well in their second warm up game against the eventual winners of the competition, Kent Exiles Stags. Then the real action started as the young HoundDogs team too on Kent Exiles Bucks in  the elimination match.  The team started badly and were soon 18-0 down. However, a mini come back was on the card as Ben Boorer ran in a TD from their own half to put the HoundDogs on the board 18-6. The Wolves then replied with another two TD’s and to finish the game with the score at 30-6.

Under 14’s

The team started well by winning both their warm up matches against Kent Exiles Wolves 18-12 and the Kent Phoenix 18-6. After having such a positive start the

HoundDogs fancied their chances against the Kent Exiles Wolves, which they had already beaten earlier on in the day, in the elimination match. The Hound dogs went 2 TD’s down early on after starting the game with a drive to the Wolves End Zone, but came up just short. teh wolves then moved the ball down field to open the scoring. The QB Charlie Boorer was picked off as he tried to find his brother with a long pass. Again, the Wolves ran the ball back to make the score 12-0. With the HoundDogs chasing the game, Charlie Boorer connected with his brother to bring them back into the game 12-6, for the Wolves to reply 18-6. Ned Foster then got his team back into the game with a great catch and run, but all proved too little too late. However, the team showed great skills and the game could of gone the other way on a different day.

Chairman’s Report on the year to date.

Well, it’s been 24 hours since I arrived home from the first ever South East Youth American Football Championships finals. We made it to Canterbury and we competed in both age groups. We may not have made it past the elimination stage but we made it there. When I set this club up 13 months ago, the aim was to get an u14’s team out for a couple of the 6 events that were planned, but we smashed that goal. We managed to attend all five competitive tournaments as well as the trial event that was held 9 months ago, not only with an U14’s team, but we also got an U11’s team out too.

During the tournaments, the players have made some mistakes that they have taken away and learnt from. But it’s not just the players who have learnt. I have learnt a lot too. I too, have made mistakes, and the lads have shown me how I also need to self evaluate and access these mistakes, along with what I need to work on to be a better coach, parent and role model. Some of the skills the boys have shown have nothing short of a miracle. I have seen our QB make a 40 yard completed pass with a bang on the money throw. I have seen Running Backs run the length of the pitch avoiding defenders and I have seen our players make tackles that I thought they would never get to.

I am immensely proud of all the children that have participated in these tournaments and have worn the HoundDogs uniform with pride and determination. They have developed their skill beyond my wildest dreams and have shown great determination and ambition to play this all-inclusive, wonderful sport which we play.

I would like to thank the whole of South East Youth American Football staff, who have helped us develop to the point that we are today. Ian Miles has been a fountain of knowledge and help. Ted and Mary have travelled miles to help develop our club with school coaching and point blankly refused to accept a penny from us. It’s people like these three who make the work we do as volunteers as rewarding as it is. I would also like to send a massive thank you to the parents, who have been dragged to training on wet and cold Wednesday nights, as well as having to get up early on a Sunday morning to attend the tournaments. A massive thank you must also go to the coaches who have helped take these children and mould them into the players that they are today.

A final massive thank you needs to go out to the HoundDogs Committee team, who have had to put up with my constant bombarding of messages about every Football-related idea that I have had a thought about.

We will continue to train, continue to learn and continue to make improvements as we become an established club in the South East.

Sunday was probably the biggest day to date in the short history of Hellingly HoundDogs. Sunday, 28^th May saw the HoundDogs get their chance to become hosts of the 2017 SEYAF Championships, as they welcomed three teams from Kent to Horsebridge Recreational Ground.

The ground looked perfect as teams arrived, with all 3 pitches white lined and end zone pylons basking  in sunshine. The PA system was all up and running with the sounds of “Sussex By The Sea” blaring out, along with the clubhouse TV’s displaying a complete fixture list and results page.

The games started at 11am after a minute’s silence to mark the tragic events in Manchester the week before.

The HoundDogs Cadet team, who were still awaiting their first ever win, took to the field against top of the table Kent Exiles Stags. The HoundDogs went down 30-6, but scoring against the Stags was a feat in itself, after a couple of thumping defeats. The HoundDogs TD came from Archie Foster, who completed a fantastic 30 yard run to score in his first ever match for the HoundDogs.

The HoundDogs then took on the newly formed Kent Exiles Bucks. The game finished in a 12-all draw and equalled the HoundDogs best ever result. Both TDs came from Archie Foster, who demonstrated a performance full of speed and agility.

They then faced another very competent side from East Kent Mavericks. This game was an end to end scoring feast that also finished in a draw at 18-all. Again, Archie Foster scored 2 TDs, with a run from his own half and a thrown ball from QB Ben Boorer. The other TD came from Morgan Scott-Brundle, who carried on his fine form from the last tournament.

Next it was time to play the team that the HoundDogs are more evenly matched against,

and drew with in Tournament 3, Kent Phoenix.  It was another exciting game, and the HoundDogs ran out winners 12-0. Again, Archie Foster sealed a great day for himself and the team, as he scored both TDs and secured the HoundDogs’ first ever win. A special mention goes to Hayden Puttick and Charlie Pattenden, who both completed fine tackles to stop the Phoenix from scoring.

The DPO Home Improvement MVP goes to Archie Foster for his 7 TDs.

The Youth team started their day with a game against the Exiles Dogs, and lost 18-6 in this opening  game. The TD for the HoundDogs came from Riley Davis with a catch in the corner of the end zone.

They then bounced back as they took on Kent Phoenix, winning 12-0. The pairing of QB

Charlie Boorer and Riley Davis proved dangerous as the pair combined twice to score both TD’s, taking the duo to 3TD’s for the day so far.

The Youth team then took on East Kent Mavericks. This was the teams’ fourth encounter with each other, with the Mav’s winning all the other meetings. The Mav’s kept up their winning streak, as they ran out the 12-6 winners of this match. QB Charlie Boorer scored the Hound Dogs only TD with a run up the side line after the Mav’s defence decided to blitz the QB but couldn’t get anywhere near  him.

In the team’s last game they registered their 3^rd loss of the day, as they went down 12-6 to

Kent Exiles Wolves.

The DPO Home Improvement MVP Award goes to Riley Davis for some clinical catches and three fantastic TD’s.

Hellingly HoundDogs Chairman added, “It was a fantastic day for our organisation. There are a lot of people to thank who helped to pull this day off. We had lots of volunteers helping to run the day, for which I thank them immensely. We also had several businesses donate prizes for our raffle, as well as parents making cakes for our stall. These two alone helped raise almost £200 for the club. I would also like to thank two of our coaches for their help on the day, in making sure the boys were ready for this event. I am very proud of both of the teams that competed and their development in the sport has been phenomenal. This is down to our coaching team, who all work exceptionally hard to help encourage the kids”.
